Having just finished loving Wisdom’s Kiss by Catherine Gilbert Murdock and mildly enjoying The Drop by Michael Connelly, I was looking forward to reading a Young Adult fairy tale by an author I like. Unfortunately, 17 pages into it, I just couldn’t get into it. So, I bagged that one for an adult book by an author I really like. It was outside his ‘normal’ genre, so I didn’t know what to expect. Ten pages in I got bogged down and I bagged book two.
Is it me? Is it timing? Is it mood? Is it the book?
Gladly, I started another book which I really like. I guess I should tell you the name, huh? Well, It’s The Big Goodbye by Michael Lister. A noir-ish mystery set in Panama City, FL. But that’s all I’m going to say for now, because I’m really wondering how many of you have bagged books early on and for what reason. Do you go back to them? I’ve done that once. I don’t remember even which book, but I remember liking it the second time.
So, any of you out there who feel like commenting, feel free.
I have been bagging a few too many books lately. I know this feeling. We think a lot alike. We have similar reactions to books. Could you use a night or two at the movie theater?
Actually, I have a night in Warwick coming up tonight and then again for New Year’s Eve. It is there that I try to get away from ‘normal’ reading and catch up on my 1100 page Black Lizard Big Book of Black Mask Stories. I know you laugh at the title, Beth. The reading and the surroundings are like an intermezzo at a fine restaurant, cleansing the reading palate. After Black Mask, I’m changing course and may try my hand at Thoreau’s Cape Cod, my second favorite place in the world.. I bought an 1896, 2-volume edition but may preserve that and take a copy out of the library.
Ha Ha don’t want to break the spine? I’m rubbing off on you!
Yep!
You know that I’ve been bagging books left and right. Just finished Dangerous Neighbors. YES I finished it! How could I not finish I had to find out what had happened to Anna and why Katherine felt such anger and guilt. The writing is, of course, beautiful. I’ve now moved onto a Christmas gift Van Gogh by Naifeh and Smith. Two chapters in and loving it. Thanks Ed! I rarely go back to a bagged book, because there’s usually a really good reason I couldn’t get into it.
Glad you’re liking Van Gogh. It’d be a long haul (I don’t know how many pages, but it’s a lot) if you didn’t like it. And, of course, Beth Kephart’s writing is always something to savor.
