I remember three things from my pass throughs:
1. The drab Edward Durell Stone architecture has been supplemented with the ‘high tech’ image that SUNY Albany is trying to create,
2. The beer smelling (especially on a Saturday night/Sunday morning), dingy old Rathskeller of yore where everyone congregated around long tables, where you could get great greasy food has been replaced with fast food kiosks, a la Burger King, eliminating the rustic, grungy feeling that I loved so much, and
3. The students look sooooooooooooooooooo young.
I have such fond memories of Albany State. Playing frisbee in the fountain, sitting out in the quads listening to music coming out the dorm windows, sleeping on those wonderfully long couches on the library mezzanine, drinking ripple wine in the dorm rooms. Isn’t that what college is all about?
I doubt I’ll see anyone I know (or remember) from the class of ’74 and my return may ultimately be another ‘pass through’ but curiosity (and sentimentality) is creeping up on me. So, if you’re a class of ’74 alum, maybe I’ll see you there.
