For the past half dozen years, Susan and I have spent Memorial Day Weekend at the Warwick Valley Winery’s Bob Dylan Festival and this year is no exception. It’s not that we’re necessarily avid Dylan fans because we’re not. But it’s a weekend of great music
, beautiful scenery, and bottles of their great hard cider.
Some of our local favorites will again grace their stage, E’lissa Jones and Uncle Shoehorn being the two biggies.
In some ways, it’s like old home week. We see some of the same people each year. We search the sky for the graceful spread wings of hawks gliding on the air currents. We stare at the mountains in the not-so-distance and the glorious blue skies that we’ve been lucky enough to have on those days. We partake of our traditional lunch there, a delicious salad with some dressing that we haven’t found anywhere else and their chicken sandwich…and, again, a few classes of the apple or raspberry cider.
This year we’re taking Harley who doesn’t get out much these days, his hind paws don’t support him like they used to. He should enjoy the great outdoors, under the shade of ‘our’ tree.
The weekend gives us the needed pause to reflect on the good things we have, the beautiful world around us and to enjoy each other for an extended period of time, not just those few hours after work. And we do, actually, listen to the music.
So, I invite you all to join us (just don’t take our traditional spot under ‘our’ tree) for what always turns out to be a wonderful weekend. Just bring a lot of sunscreen, ’cause that sun does shine.
And while we’re enjoying all of these wonders, let us not forget those men and women and animals who have fought so that we can enjoy this weekend. We salute our veterans wherever they are and appreciate their service to our country.
What a wonderful reminisce of a “memorial” day weekend celebration.
We will be thinking of you while we BBQ in California and listen to rag time jazz.
Lets us remember our fathers who fought in WWII, my brothers in the Vietnam War, and my son in the Navy and my grandson in the Army who stand for freedom and protection of the rights of all of us.

Not sure you made it on the Saturday of Dylan Fest this year. The weather was most un-cooperative. Nevertheless, we played and ironically had what is probably our best set of Dylan music in our seven years playing that event. Was pleased to see this blog and to learn that we were among your faves. That really feels good to hear! Anyhow, in the likely event that you stayed home on the cold, rainy saturday, I have included a link here to the recording of our set for your listening pleasure! Thanks so much for the kind words and don’t forget we’re giving a free show on Saturday June 21st on Railroad Green in downtown Warwick. Bring a chair and enjoy the evening! Best, Tony Vee from Uncle Shoehorn! http://archive.org/details/DylanFest2013
Wow. Thanks. I missed the Saturday show because of the weather. I am sorry I missed you. I will absolutely listen to the set. Made the Sunday and Monday sessions but Saturday always seems to be the best day. And no Kennedys to close the show. Very disappointing. Will try to make June 21. Thanks again.
Just got a chance to listen to your Dylan set tonight. Loved it. Anyone who has the chance should click on the link and listen. Going to try to catch you at the winery in early July…the weekend after July 4. Enjoy the summer solstice.
